Jamaican Lanterns

Fall is such a completely different experience here in New England than it is in Hawaii. Granted, yes, duh, Hawaii doesn't have seasons and yes, duh, we don't wear cardigans and scarves, but foliage and weather aside, Fall activities here in the North East are lovely and festive and everyone, from toddlers and tykes to grandma and grandpa, takes part in the fun.

A lantern walk around the Jamaica Plain Pond drew in a crowd of a few thousand people, and as bands played beneath a gazebo, hundreds of families walked around the pond with homemade, candlelit lanterns fashioned from 2 liter bottles and tissue paper or spaghetti jars and house paint.

The closest thing Hawaii has to a lantern walk is the annual Memorial Day Lantern Float across a man-made beach in downtown Honolulu. Beautiful, but not so festive. And people don't dress up for it.

Makes me almost wish that I had white Christmases when I was growing up.

HAH. Right.

Some really beautiful pictures. I really like these, like really. Even more than those fake Polaroids. They remind me of the shots in that movie "The Assassination of Jesse James . . ." when they are robbing the train in the forest, except yours are in color, and better.
